What exactly is SMALL-ISH?
I could perhaps have described my house as small but I know this is a relative term.
Now I’ll be honest, our house is not teeny tiny but it is normally a house for 4 people; 2 adults and 2 children and it serves us very well. However, there is little space to spare. We have no “spare bedroom”, we have no formal dining room and if you’re watching TV in the lounge then it’s a family affair as the room is too small for people to get away from the TV.
The time when our house really feels Small-ish is over the Christmas season as our household doubles with the addition of the Grandparents.
A house for 4 needs to become a house for 8
We live almost half way between the parents of myself and my husband so we end up hosting Christmas.
Christmas, I should explain, lasts at least 7 days as both sets of parents arrive around the 21st or 22nd, in order to avoid travel issues, and they then leave about 30th after my eldest daughter’s birthday.
Now our family home for 4 people has to find room for 8 people AND Christmas. This means finding more beds, more dining space, more seats in the lounge as well room for the presents, the Christmas Tree, and the extra food.
Over the years we have done a lot of work on the house to make it more flexible and coping with Christmas classifies as my ultimate test.
Recently I have been going through a clutter clearing process and this is not yet complete. There is also a lot of preparation to do on practical matters as well as the pretty fun stuff.
Where to start
My first task is to do what you always do when starting a project – imagine the “Dream” outcome and then “Make a plan”.
I’m imagining having my house looking lovely and me floating around stress free as a perfect host whilst my guests all make themselves feel at home and spend many happy hours watching TV, playing board games and cooking.
So with that vision in mind I’m going to start my plan.
Hopefully by the end of this I will be able to enjoy my Christmas knowing the house is as well organised as possible.
So I’m sure you’re wondering why you should keep reading
My advent blog won’t just be a diary of everything I have to do over Christmas, it will also include lots of tips and ideas for you about how to cope with having a small-ish space that needs to work like a big space from time to time.
